It can be hard to choose one Chinese bakery in Oakland Chinatown. The other candidates - Alice St. Bakery, Napoleon Super Bakery, Wonder Food Bakery, and the newest kid on the block, R’Noodle & Bakery - all have their takes on pineapple buns, sheet cakes, and traditional pastries. But if pressed, I would admit that Ruby King’s dan tat (egg custard tarts) have the flakiest crusts in town. Get them fresh out of the oven, and you can’t beat the winning combination of the crisp layers melting into the sweet, soft custard with each bite.
