If you’ve lived here long enough, chances are you’ve frozen up in your bed during a 3.4 or 4.1 magnitude earthquake asking yourself over and over again, “Why the hell haven’t I moved away from California?” But most locals will tell you that those are, in fact, relatively tame, and may even suggest a crash-course on the unnerving powers of a true Big One with a trip to Heinhold’s. The floor and bar of this historic wooden building in Jack London are extremely slanted from the force of the great 1906 quake, and inside still feels like a time capsule with photos, newspaper clippings, and knick-knacks from the past on the walls. If hanging out in this dark relic of Mother Nature’s wrath is a bit too foreboding, have a drink in sunnier pastures - they have a huge front patio overlooking the water.
