You’ve heard of Che Fico, the impressive looking Italian restaurant in NoPa that could double as a wedding venue, complete with pumped up prices to match. But for a more relaxed meal, go downstairs to Che Fico Alimentari. The sister spot has a more simplified menu and space. It’s your best bet for a pizza, pasta, and wine date night that’s a few notches above casual.

The dining room with black, red, and white accents is much dimmer than its upstairs chandelier-filled counterpart. Consider it the stripped-down but more intimate acoustic version of a Top 40 hit. There’s a mini market up front where dried pastas, housemade salami, and Che Fico-branded chili bomba are for sale. The host will lead you past the shelves of pantry staples to the bar or a table in the long space. From there, get your flirt on and brush hands with a date while splitting parmesan-dusted supplí and sourdough pizzas.

Those pies are the highlights of a Che Fico Alimentari meal. They nail the Holy Crust Trifecta: blistered, charred, and finished off with cheese. Even simple classics, like the garlicky margherita, will win over the table. The pastas lean traditional, and are less consistent. The plump agnolotti dal plin, filled with porchetta, will satisfy the saucy carbohydrate craving you had on your way over. But the cacio e pepe is one dimensional, and the rigatoni amatriciana doesn’t pack the flavor punch we expect.

Head upstairs to Che Fico when you have a big-deal occasion that calls for a flashy space. But save Che Fico Alimentari for the next time you want to dial up the romance with a hot date and some sangiovese, minus the upstairs price tags.

Supplí

Start every meal with these (order one per person, to avoid any aggressive jockeying for the last bite). The fontina oozes out of these golden-brown risotto balls.

Agnolotti Dal Plin

The best pasta we’ve had here. The little pockets are stuffed with salty, rich porchetta that seems to melt the second it hits your tongue.

Margherita Pizza

An excellent pizza on just-tangy-enough sourdough crust, which you should drag through any leftover sauce or dunk into their housemade calabrian chili bomba. The thinly sliced garlic on top is a nice touch.

Rigatoni Amatriciana

Not the best pasta you’ll ever have, but not offensive.

Mezze Maniche Cacio E Pepe

We want to like this, but the richness overpowers any discernible flavor. Skip.
