Protect Your Surfaces With These Attractive Coasters
Our favorite coasters in terrazzo, terracotta, linen, and more.
Written by

One of my favorite pastimes is aspirationally watching Architectural Digest’s Open Tour videos, where the AD team interviews celebrities on their home design and decor. However, during a recent YouTube rabbit hole, I was appalled to discover that one of my childhood faves, Hillary Duff, doesn’t use coasters with her drinks, and, as a result, has tons of water rings and damage on her otherwise gorgeous sideboard.

Coasters are great, if not essential. They protect your furniture from condensation marks, heat damage, and scuffs - even if the furniture in question is an IKEA coffee table rather than an intricate wooden piece that likely costs more than my entire rent check. But they also serve as an extension of your taste and personality. If the rest of your decor is chic and minimal, you can use coasters to bring some color or brightness to a room. Or, if you prefer a maximalist aesthetic, you can amp up the chaotic nature of your home’s decor by adding more non-traditional elements, or tie everything together with a sleek, muted set. You can also play with textures when shopping for coasters, since they come in wood, marble, wool, glass, and more.

Also, a great classy coaster simply tells your guests (and yourself) that you’ve got your life together, even if that’s not necessarily the case. By handing your guest a nice coaster that you didn’t just swipe from a bar, you’re showing that you not only have respect for your things and your space, but you’re an elegant host too.

So, if you’re ready to upgrade your standard coasters to something nicer (or if you’re Hillary Duff), here are the best coasters you can buy online, from a classic monogrammed set to a modular tile set that can also act as a trivet.

A Chic Monogrammed Coaster

Nothing says that you have your life together quite like offering a monogrammed coaster to a guest with their drink. This one has a gorgeous abalone shell inlay and brass accents that amp up the fanciness.

3-Dimensional Coasters That Can Be A Trivet

You’ve probably already seen these at your one friend’s apartment that looks like the MoMa Design Store. These coasters create a 3D cube illusion with various shades and colors, and they can all fit together seamlessly to provide a protective surface for hot pans. You can also mix and match the tiles in various color combinations, but we like the standard multi-pattern to start your collection.

Swirly Porcelain Coasters

These made-to-order porcelain coasters are available in a timeless white-and-navy-blue swirl. Handmade by a ceramist in Upstate New York, the coasters have cork backings to protect your surfaces from both condensation and scratches, and they have a slightly raised rim to help keep your glass in place.

Earthy Terracotta Coasters

Inspired by sand dunes, these ridged terracotta coasters have a protective cork backing to save your surfaces from scratches. They also match, but with different colors, which is great for telling drinks apart when everyone is having the same cocktail.
