Tonalli Mexican Restaurant & Pizzeria
Included In
We first went to this Pennsport restaurant for a taste of their thirst-trapping al pastor. And while the pork at this laidback BYOB is great, it’s the stacked nachos, Mexican pizzas, and adobo-spiced shrimp tacos that will keep us coming back to Tonalli. A deep house-meets-Latin bass soundtrack plays inside the sparse dining room, but it’s as family friendly and first-date casual as they come—especially out front at the wooden picnic tables.

You’ll want to split (at least) one of the thin-crust pizzas, which are topped with everything from salsa verde chicken to refried beans. But it’s the Trompo Al Pastor, with red salsa pork, pineapple, and cilantro salsa verde that you’ll want to have all to yourself (pineapple-on-pizza hive, stand up).

Nachos
These crispy corn chips are topped with chihuahua cheese, refried beans, pico de gallo, sour cream and queso fresco, and somehow, never get soggy. A must order with a group.

Shrimp Tacos
All of the tacos are solid at Tonalli, but these are the standouts. The shrimp are spiced with adobo, so they're savory, tangy, and topped with aromatic cilantro and a spicy aioli.

El Patriota Pizza
This thin crust pie is topped with tender ribeye steak, sweet tomato sauce, red onion, poblano peppers, mozzarella, cilantro radish and salsa verde. It's definitely hefty, but but not soggy.

Trompo Al Pastor Pizza
This pizza has the best of all worlds—red salsa pork al pastor, fresh pineapple, mozzarella, onion, cilantro, and salsa verde on top of a light, crispy crust. We'd forego the al pastor tacos for this pie any day of the week.

Borrego En Adobo
This gorgeous lamb shoulder has a beautifully smoky, herby flavor, but can occasionally be a bit tough to chew. Don't get it as a solo main, but if you're here with a group, it's good to share.
