Bushwick bars are usually either divey or aggressively themed, but Upnorth is neither of those things. It is, however, a Canadian spot, and you might get that sense from how incredibly nice the bartenders are. They’ll be happy to give you an excellent recommendation for a cocktail that you otherwise might not have ordered. There’s also poutine, a few Canadian beers, and some charming ram taxidermy on the walls, but when it comes down to it, Upnorth is just a great simple bar in the middle of Bushwick’s busiest area (right off the Jefferson Avenue L). Come for Happy Hour with a date or some friends and order a burger and some poutine.

If you spend anytime near the Jefferson L Stop in Bushwick, you should know about Union Pizza Works for a casual night out with friends or your kids.
If it’s a weekend, and you need somewhere to dance in Bushwick, try Mad Tropical. It’s a divey bar with a tropical theme, a dance floor, and tacos.

Bill's Bar & Burger
We had hoped that instead of conforming to Midtown, Bill’s Bar and Burger would make Midtown conform to it. It did not.
If you’re in Gowanus, and you need a normal bar that’s just a little nicer than a dive, go to Halyards. There’s a pool table and occasionally a DJ.
Croxley’s is a big sports bar in Williamsburg with lots of seating and very good buffalo wings.
