This place isn’t really “mad” tropical. Sure, there are some potted plants and bright barstools, but mostly it just feels like the bar that was here before it. That bar was called Tandem, and, like that place, Mad Tropical is a semi-divey spot where you can hang with a date up front or hit the dance floor in back. Dance parties occur Thursday through Sunday, so if you need somewhere in Bushwick to get a little weird, this is a perfectly good choice. And if you get hungry midway through your dance party, there are tacos and Mexican pizzas.

La Isla Cuchifritos
We love La Isla Cuchifritos for the fact that a) it’s cheap and delicious, and b) it sort of feels like you’re grubbing in tropical Puerto Rico rather than not-so-tropical Brooklyn.
Sally Roots does affordable Caribbean/American food in a Bushwick space where you’ll want to hang out.

Tacombi @ Fonda Nolita
Tacombi has an awesome Mexican courtyard, and gets serious points for creativity. All in all, we back the place, especially now that they have a liquor license.
La Slowteria is a casual spot in Carroll Gardens that serves some of the best Mexican food in Brooklyn.
La Morada is a Mexican restaurant in Mott Haven with seven different kinds of mole, some excellent tacos, and many other things you’ll want to eat.
