Australians are taking over Manhattan, and their reach has officially stretched all the way to the UWS, with this downtown-feeling bar that can only be described as an industrial saloon. Whether or not that appeals to you, the cocktails here are solid, and the two-for-one drinks and $1 oyster offer at Happy Hour (till 8pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends) is hard to argue with.

We had hoped that instead of conforming to Midtown, Bill’s Bar and Burger would make Midtown conform to it. It did not.
If you’re in Gowanus, and you need a normal bar that’s just a little nicer than a dive, go to Halyards. There’s a pool table and occasionally a DJ.
Croxley’s is a big sports bar in Williamsburg with lots of seating and very good buffalo wings.

Jacobs Pickles is great if you need a spot for drinks or an Upper West Side dinner meetup with someone you know will embrace the heavy bar food. But it’s not a restaurant with traveling for.
