While Japan has no shortage of places that specialize in grilled freshwater eel, until Toku Unagi & Sushi’s opening, LA has never had one of its own. And there’s a lot to a-moray about this new Weho restaurant, including fatty toro and firefly squid that’s shipped directly from Japan, and a serene space that overlooks the neighborhood’s streets, but the unagi set is the star here. Served in a lacquered box, the eel is accompanied by a bowl of miso soup, tsukemono (Japanese pickles), and a pot of tea that’s meant to be poured over the entire thing. This is by far one of the best - and most decadent - presentations of unagi in the entire city, however, all of that decadence comes at a price: Namely, a meal that can end up at around $150 per person. The aforementioned unagi sets range from $53-$98, and while the eel is light and fluffy, and the overall experience is completely unique, we’re not so sure it’s worth such a significant portion of your monthly rent.
