Somewhere between the crunch of a particularly crispy chicken wing and ordering another round slathered with honey butter sauce, we realised Makimayo is somewhere we’ll be spending a lot of time. The pan-Asian spot jostles for attention next to West African cafes and Chinese takeaways on a permanently busy street in South Tottenham. Inside, low-key catch-ups take place underneath neon lights and against a soundtrack of not-too-loud club music, and relaxing solo meals are enjoyed in wood-clad corners. The menu—which covers Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Thai dishes—is solid and portions require a post-meal nap. But crispy chicken in any form—juicy, deep-fried karaage, wings coated in a sweet-spicy glaze, or popcorn bites in a gangnam sauce heavy on soy and garlic—should always be part of your order.
