The government’s ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ scheme offers diners a discount of up to £10 per person, excluding booze, when they eat out from Monday to Wednesday throughout August.

It’s not only an objective fact that coffee tastes better when you’re not sipping it out of a paper cup, it’s also scientifically proven that half-priced things taste better than full-priced things. So, even if you’re in a rush, you’ll be missing out if you don’t stop to get a coffee and something to eat from one of these coffee spots that are all signed up to the Eat Out To Help Out scheme.

If you’re a fan of serious coffee, you’ll probably know Flat White. This small Berwick Street spot was one of the first of a new wave of London cafés to take coffee seriously, and they still serve some of the best in town. Seating is usually fairly limited, but they’ve spread out into the street and are serving an Eat Out To Help Out brunch set menu from 9am-4pm Monday to Wednesday. The same team run Milkbar over on Bateman Street where you can also Eat Out To Help Out.

This Australian-inspired café and brunch spot has only just opened and is already popular with the north London locals. It’s got a decent-sized north-facing terrace which is cool and shaded, even on the hottest of August mornings, making it perfect for a Rishi-subsidized iced-coffee stop either before or after taking a stroll around Alexandra Palace Park, just across the road. They also have some solid brunch options, including salt fish fritters, and an excellent friareilli hash which you needn’t be shy about getting with a side of buttermilk fried chicken.

Vardo is a striking and spacious spot in Chelsea with huge windows facing directly onto the King’s Road. It also has a good-sized roof terrace and it’s as perfect for a coffee date as it is for a solo drink and some people watching. There’s an all-day menu and because it’s taking part in the Eat Out To Help Out scheme, you’ll get up to £10 per person off your bill.

Caravan roasts its own coffee beans, but also serves a full-blown restaurant menu of dishes that take cues from different world cuisines - everything from miso-glazed pork to eggplant bhaji and duck confit. There are branches on Exmouth Market and in the City, but the Granary Square spot’s industrial feel and large terrace makes it the best choice for a lively discounted coffee and a bite with friends.

Farm Girl goes all-in on the Australian healthy-eating thing for the Notting Hill crowd, but you should also know that the whole health thing here actually comes with some very good food attached. Monday through Wednesday in August, everything from the oat milk latté and flat white through to açai bowls, vegan donuts, and the excellent salads and sandwiches are half price (up to £10 per person). And if Notting Hill’s a bit of a trek, they also have branches in Fitzrovia, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, and Soho.

One of London’s best and best-known coffee shops, is also an excellent all-day restaurant. Everything from the service to the food at this friendly Shoreditch spot will make you want to plan the next time you come back, and whether you’re in for a coffee and a pastry, or a full on breakfast, brunch, or lunch, you can take advantage of the 50% off Eat Out To Take Out discount. If you’re out-and-about round Bethnal Green way, you can also check out their equally great Emma Street branch.

You can get Allpress coffee from countless spots around London, but their two-storey Dalston Lane coffee shop and restaurant is the mothership. This August, their spacious and secluded patio isn’t the only thing that makes it perfect for a coffee stop. They’re also signed up for Eat Out To Help Out.
