Help Crowdfund Curry Club, A New Initiative To Address Food Insecurity In Islington
With support from a host of London restaurants and chefs, Curry Club has plans to send out 150 meals a week in the first stage of its project.
In reaction to the breadth of lockdown experiences in London, Curry Club, a new initiative to address food insecurity, has launched a funding drive.
With support from Denai Moore of Dee’s Table, Noble Rot Soho’s head chef, Alex Jackson, food writer and chef Meera Sodha, Four Legs, Senegalese pop-up Little Baobab, and more - all of whom are offering their time, experience and talent for free - the project takes its inspiration from the Langar kitchens in Sikh culture, which provide free meals indiscriminately, regardless of status, gender, or caste.
Citing research estimating that over 19,000 Islington residents experience moderate to high levels of food insecurity, and that 14% of UK families with children have reported having insufficient food in the last six months, the Curry Club team hopes to bring together a growing network of chefs and friends to support their local communities.
While the first stage of the project will be to send out 150 meals per week in Islington between February and May, later plans include scaling to match demand for ‘the joy, comfort, and pleasure that comes with great food’, and then taking the initiative to other London boroughs.
