The Black Chef Series Taking Over Maison Yaki This Summer

  • Earlier in June, Greg Baxtrom (the chef behind Maison Yaki and Olmsted) committed to offering Maison Yaki’s kitchen space to aspiring Black entrepreneurs, chefs, bartenders, and sommeliers who want to work on their own projects. Last week, he announced that the first four chefs in that series will be Lani Halliday, Jared Howard, Michelle Williams, and Mohamed Wahiba.

  • Each chef will take over Maison Yaki’s kitchen for about a week and a half beginning July 8th and running until August 30th. Here’s a little more information about who they are and when you can see what they’ve got cooking:

  • July 8th - July 19th: Lani Halliday, baker and owner of Brutus Bakeshop in Brooklyn, will focus on her gluten-free and vegan pastries. She’s hosted pop-ups at The Awkward Scone, and is currently making pastry and picnic boxes to benefit The Okra Project. You can schedule your pick-up order here.

  • July 22nd - August 2nd: Jared Howard will be cooking dishes from his recently-launched project called Honey Bunny’s Chicken. Expect fried chicken, biscuits, and other sides you definitely want to eat in the presence of a crispy bird.

  • August 5th - August 16th: The executive chef and CEO of Good IV The Soul Catering, Michelle Williams will be making soul food. In addition to running her own catering business, she also mentors and employs high schoolers through cooking.

  • August 9th - August 30th: Brooklyn-based Chef Mohamad Wahiba will specialize in fresh pasta and other Italian treats. He’s the chef at Tripoli Events - a company that hosts pizza and pasta classes, catering, and private events. You might know Tripoli Events from their pizza booth inside of Berg’n in Bed-Stuy.
