7 New Things To Do & Eat In Chicago This Week
As vaccination rates continue to rise and things start to open back up, the concept of “making plans” is starting to re-enter our lives. And your usual excuse of, “Sorry, I already have plans,” probably won’t work for a few months. So, if you’re in need of ideas, here are seven new openings, events, and special menus to check out this week.
The Stuff
During the pandemic, Chitown Futbol club in Pilsen transformed into a drive-in movie theater called Chitown Movies. And even though the soccer club has reopened, they’ve decided to keep the movies going. This week they’re showing the classics Ferris Bueller and Friday the 13th. During the movie you can order food like popcorn, tacos, wings and pizza to be delivered to your car. Or, consider stopping by 5 Rabanitos (one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in the city) before or after the movie instead.
If you’re looking for another outdoor movie option, Wicker Park bar and restaurant Whiskey Business hosts rooftop movie nights on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tickets cost $10 (which includes headphones and popcorn) and the movies are shown on two separate 120 inch TVs. The films change every week, and next up is The Avengers and Risky Business.
On April 15th, Kasama in West Town is doing a to-go cocktail and dinner collaboration with Kasama Rum - a new Filipino rum company. The event costs $119, feeds two people, and includes a bottle of rum, ingredients to make a Filipino daiquiri and Old Fashioned, lumpia, sisig lettuce wraps, BBQ pork and longanisa skewers, garlic rice, and pineapple basque cakes. Oh, and the whole thing also includes a deck of playing cards and a Zoom link to a discussion with the chefs of Kasama and the founder of Kasama um. Order your tickets here.
On April 9th, restaurants started to reopen along the Chicago Riverwalk. So this weekend you can reunite with the 1.25-mile path, wave at kayakers, and get food and cocktails from places like Island Party tiki bar, City Winery, and the Northman.
Bella’s is a new Italian ice and helado de coco shop in Humboldt Park that opened last Saturday. Grab a helado de coco (which comes in a coconut) and stroll around the neighborhood. Or better yet, check out a Gator game at Little Cubs Field. The Humboldt Park Gators are an all-girls baseball team, and this is their inaugural season. Check out their schedule here.

Lark recently reopened their fantastic back patio, and if you’re a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, you should know about this Lakeview restaurant. During the month of April they host “RuPaul Dinner and a Show” on Friday’s at 7pm. They play episodes of season 13 with the sound on, and you can watch while eating pizza, drinking way too many cocktails, and lip-syncing for your ride home.
Off Color Brewing’s taproom, Mousetrap, has a great front patio. It’s full of shaded picnic tables that have plenty of distance between each other, and they’re large enough to grab beers with a small group. Order something from their extremely popular “Beer For” series - a line of beers they’ve developed to go with different themes. So you can do some investigative drinking and try their Beer For Golf, Beer For Tacos, Beer For Ball Games, and Beer For Brunch. All of the above will help prepare you for the upcoming Hot Vaxx Summer.
