Go just a few streets off the downtown grid and you’ll get a little escape at Zocalo Café in Clarksville. It’s bright and cheerful inside, and the plant-covered patio is a great spot for a casual lunch or dinner. The Mexican menu has a lot of options (including some healthier things), so you can choose your own adventure depending on how full you want to be at the end of the meal. But plan for queso. It’s the best thing here - and that’s saying a lot considering “Plan for Queso” should probably replace “Keep Austin Weird” as our city motto.

Curra’s exists in a class with other local mainstays Maudie's and Gueros, operating on a platform of old Austin nostalgia, margaritas, and queso.
Rosita's Al Pastor
Rosita's is our favorite al pastor taco in Austin, and maybe the world. Hit it for breakfast, if you know what's good for you.
Tamale House East
We don't use the term 'legit' often, but there's no other way to describe Tamale House East. Hit it for the breakfast tacos and best migas in town.

Whole Foods Market
The Whole Foods flagship store is still one of the most dependable places to pick up lunch in the entire city.
Fricano’s Deli & Catering
For sandwiches the size of your face, go to Fricano’s. Its location on campus isn’t the best, but the schlep is always worth it.
