It’s hard not to think of Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” bop while eating at Casa Almenara in Midtown. One minute we’re loving the spicy, fresh flavors of the jalapeño-sauced salmon tostada, and the next we’re disappointed by the bland aguachile ceviche. While the small plates had some tasty moments, most of the entrees can best be described as fine. Their updated and fashionable interior with trendy wicker lighting fixtures (every chic restaurant in town seems to be using the same damn lighting designer) is perfect to sip rather good cocktails like the fruity Cheesecake Martini. So basically the move here is to drink with friends and only order small plates like the tostadas or nachos. It’s important to know your strengths.
