If you’ve ever woken up in a cold sweat, after another nightmare about how you’ve never experienced a truly great taco like they have in LA (which isn’t true, by the way), go to Border Town’s weekly Sunday pop-up at Commune, a Clinton Hill cafe. You’ll find the small-batch tortilla makers under a tent, making chewy, lard-kissed tortillas, filled with things like chicharrones in salsa roja, and the smoothest, gentlest refried beans you’ve ever had. On Thursday-Saturday mornings, you'll find them taking over Greenpoint ice cream store Screen Door.
The line to order can be long, and the line to wait for your order even longer, but if you have two hours to kill, stick around for the $5 tacos. If you end up spending every waking moment afterwards thinking about those Sonoran wheat flour tortillas, you should know they’re for sale at Big Night, and Marlow & Daughters.
