Located in the old Belizean Paradise space, Spicy Sugar Thai is a charming Thai diner in Mid-City (with a second location in Long Beach) that’s a solid choice for a casual weeknight meal. The menu is long and mixes standard options like pad krapow and tom kha with some eyebrow-raising dishes. Or at least our eyebrows shot up when our server whipped out a blowtorch to melt cheese over their “pad thai meltdown.” Sugar Spice Thai likes to have fun like that, as seen in its curry-fied chili dogs, blue mango sticky rice, and chicken katsu smothered in panang curry. We appreciate the creativity, but the more traditional dishes like chicken larb with tons of lime, chiles, and rice powder, and the papaya salad with salted crab are what we'd come back for.
